Donald Trump has reiterated his call to European allies that the United States will never back down from its goals regarding Greenland.
This message was reinforced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who said that Europe is "too weak" to guarantee its own security.
During an interview with NBC News, Bessent downplayed the European Union's threats to cancel the trade deal with the Trump administration, emphasizing that the president is using this agreement as a strategy to achieve his goals.
Bessent said the trade deal has not yet been finalized, suggesting the US president is acting with emergency powers to achieve the goals.
On Saturday, Trump announced a 10% tariff on goods from eight European countries, with a possible increase to 25% if a deal to buy Greenland is not reached. The move sparked a backlash, including criticism from French President Emmanuel Macron, who called it “unacceptable.”
Bessent explained the request for Greenland in the context of geopolitical competition in the Arctic and Trump's plan to deploy the "Golden Dome" missile shield. He also mentioned Europe's previous dependence on Russia, noting that this has influenced security policy.
Speaking about Trump's tactics towards Europe, Bessent said the president has no intention of changing his stance, adding that the United States demonstrates strength while the Europeans show weakness. He stressed that, in terms of security, Greenland should be part of the United States.
On concerns among European leaders that buying Greenland could lead to the dissolution of NATO, Bessent described this dilemma as "false," saying that European leaders will realize they need the security umbrella of the United States.
