Two American soldiers and an American civilian translator were killed and three others were wounded in an ambush by the Islamic State group in Syria on Saturday.
The attack on US troops is the first to cause casualties since the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar Assad a year ago.
According to protocol, the identities of the victims will remain confidential for 24 hours until their families are notified.
In his first reaction, after the deaths of the Americans, the Minister of War warned anyone targeting Americans and that "the barbarian who carried out this attack has been killed."
The gunfire occurred towards Syrian and US forces on Saturday during a joint patrol in the historic city of Palmyra.
Initial reports spoke only of the wounded, who were transported by helicopters to the al-Tanf garrison near the borders with Iraq and Jordan.
