Tensions rise, Macron and Scholz respond to Putin: Ukraine should be allowed to

The leaders of France and Germany said on Tuesday that Ukraine should be allowed to strike military targets inside Russia, from which Russian forces are firing missiles into Ukrainian soil.

However, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said other targets inside Russia should not be hit by Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the West earlier Tuesday that NATO members in Europe are playing with fire by demanding that Ukraine be allowed to use Western weapons to attack Russian territory.

This, according to Putin, would provoke global conflict.

"We support Ukraine and we don't want escalation. This has not changed," Macron said during a joint conference with Scholz in Meseberg, Germany.

"We think we should allow them to neutralize the military areas from which they were firing the rockets; the military zones from which Ukraine is being attacked. But we must not allow them to hit other targets in Russia, nor other military and civilian areas in Russia," he added.

Scholz said that he agrees with Macron and that Ukraine is allowed to defend itself as long as it respects the conditions of the countries from which it supplies weapons, as well as as long as it respects international law.

"Ukraine has every opportunity under international law for what it is doing. This should be noted. "I find it strange when some people argue that she shouldn't be allowed to defend herself and take appropriate action for that," Scholz said.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told the Economist that alliance members should allow Ukraine to strike deep inside Russia with Western weapons.

This position has been supported by several member countries from Europe, but not by the United States.

Even in Germany there is reluctance to do so, due to fears that this war could escalate into a wider conflict.
