About 65% of Americans believe that President Donald Trump could order a large-scale ground offensive against Iran, but only 7% of them support such action, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.
The data shows a stark contrast between the public's perception of the direction of American policy and the willingness to support further military escalation.
The poll, conducted over three days and recently completed, was conducted on a sample of 1,545 adults in the US, with a margin of error of about 3 percentage points.
The results come at a moment of high tension, just days after the joint US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28.
Meanwhile, President Trump's popularity remains relatively stable at 40%, a minimal increase of one point compared to the previous measurement.
The findings suggest that, although public opinion expects a possible escalation of the conflict, support for a ground intervention remains extremely low, reflecting a deep reservation towards a new war in the Middle East.
