Scene like 'La Casa de Papel', all the details of the robbery in Naples...
Around noon, a serious incident occurred in Naples, in the Medaglie d'Oro square, which connects the Vomero and Arenella districts. A passerby noticed unusual movements inside a branch of the Crédit Agricole bank and immediately called the 112 emergency number, mobilizing security forces.
Within minutes, the area was filled with sirens and the carabinieri surrounded the bank, confirming that it was a robbery in progress. There were about 25 hostages inside, including customers and employees. The perpetrators, armed and with their faces covered, also threatened the bank manager as soon as they noticed the police presence outside.
The scene unfolded in an atmosphere of high tension, as numerous citizens gathered at a distance, drawn in by the situation that resembled a movie. The hostages were held for about an hour, from 12:30 to 13:30, huddled in a small room, at gunpoint. During this time there were no negotiations or surrender signals.
The robbers acted decisively and according to a clear plan. They targeted the safes, opening dozens of them. For the hostages, entire minutes passed in fear and uncertainty; some people developed health problems due to stress and anxiety.
Meanwhile, outside, law enforcement tightened security measures and set up checkpoints, while awaiting the intervention of the GIS special unit. It was not ruled out that the perpetrators escaped through underground tunnels, a method known in sophisticated robberies.
At around 1:30 p.m., firefighters and carabinieri managed to create an entrance and pull the hostages out one by one. They emerged shaken but uninjured. Six people received medical treatment at the scene for shock, without needing to be hospitalized.
The Naples prosecutor, Nicola Gratteri, also arrived at the scene and closely followed the developments. However, for several hours it remained unclear whether the robbers were still inside the bank or had managed to escape.
The answer came in the afternoon, around 17:00, when the GIS special unit intervened in the bank. The operation resulted in the perpetrators having left. They had entered and exited through an open hole in the floor, connected to an underground tunnel, which is thought to be connected to the sewer network or other existing spaces.
Dozens of safes were found open, while the value of the damage remains unknown, as their contents are known only by customers and will be verified in the coming days.
Investigators are also analyzing a vehicle with temporary paper license plates, which is suspected to have been used by the perpetrators. Meanwhile, evidence from hostages is being collected to identify the perpetrators and reconstruct the incident in detail. According to preliminary information, the robbers are suspected to have been Italian citizens.
The prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, praised the response of the law enforcement agencies, emphasizing their professionalism and efficiency in managing the situation. Meanwhile, the search for the perpetrators continues.
