An attack in the heart of Moscow turns the Russian-Ukrainian conflict into the darkest terrain of what is considered a secret war.
The assassination of General Fanil Sarvarov, a senior officer in the Russian General Staff, opens a very sensitive front: Russian authorities are openly discussing the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence agencies.
The assassination of Putin's general came at a time when Kiev has intensified drone attacks targeting infrastructure in southern Russia, while on the diplomatic front, Washington signals continued dialogue with the Kremlin.
The explosive power of the homemade bomb that killed General Fanil Sarvarov in Moscow this morning was equivalent to about 300 grams of TNT, two law enforcement sources told the RBK news agency. The Moscow Prosecutor’s Office, which has taken over the investigation, said the device was placed with a magnet on the underside of Sarvarov’s Kia Sorento, near the driver’s seat. Tass reports that the explosion occurred when the driver applied the brakes.
“Investigators are following up on multiple leads in the murder” of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Operational Training Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, who died after a bomb exploded under his car this morning in Moscow. “One of these leads is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence,” said Svetlana Petrenko, the official spokeswoman for the Russian Investigative Committee. Russian media reported that a car exploded in a parking lot on Yaseneva Street in Moscow at around 7 a.m. with the driver inside.
"An explosive device placed under the chassis of a car exploded on the morning of December 22 (...) in Moscow, and General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Operational Training Department of the Russian General Staff, died from his wounds," the Russian news agency Tass reported, citing Svetlata Petrenko, a spokeswoman for the Russian Investigative Committee, who added that authorities suspect the involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services in the attack. Shortly before, there had been reports of a car explosion in the courtyard of a building in southern Moscow.
