Police in Montenegro said on Tuesday they are investigating after the discovery of an underground tunnel connecting an apartment building to a nearby court warehouse, which stores seized narcotics and other evidence of crimes.

The tunnel was discovered under the Supreme Court building in Podgorica, said Interior Minister Filip Axic.

President of the Supreme Court Boris Savič said in a conference with journalists that based on the first checks "nothing is missing" in the warehouse.

The Minister of the Interior said that it is a "well-planned and organized action, which has been prepared for months and resembles action movies". He said that the apartment where the underground tunnel starts was rented a few months ago.

Footage released by Montenegrin state television shows a large hole in the wall behind what appear to be warehouse shelves that hold court evidence.

According to the data of the state authorities, in the last three years, a total of about 9.5 tons of drugs of various types, of which about two tons of cocaine and about seven tons of marijuana, have been stored in the warehouse of the Supreme Court in Podgorica.

The tunnel entrance to the court building was found in a "well-hidden" location inside the warehouse, court president Boris Savic said, adding that "the perpetrators dug into the foundation of the building for months to get inside."

Montenegro, a small country on the Adriatic Sea, a member of NATO, has pledged to fight crime and corruption as it seeks to join the European Union, has long been considered one of the main drug-trafficking routes in Western Europe. /VOA
