Makis Voridis resigned from the position of Minister of Immigration and Asylum, in the shadow of the OPEKEPE scandal.
In addition to Voridis, the deputy ministers of Foreign Affairs, Tassos Hadjivassiliou, Rural Development and Food, Dionysis Stamenitis, and Digital Governance, Christos Boukoros, also resigned. The resignations were accepted by the Prime Minister.
"It is hereby announced that the Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Makis Voridis, has submitted his resignation to the Prime Minister, for the reasons stated in the attached letter. The Prime Minister has accepted his resignation."
At the same time, the Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Tassos Hadjivassiliou, of Rural Development and Food, Dionysis Stamenitis, and of Digital Governance, Christos Boukoros, submitted their resignations, which were also accepted by the Prime Minister.
Recently, the Secretary General of Rural Development and Food, George Stratakos, also submitted his resignation.
"The replacements of the above-mentioned will be announced in the coming days ," the Greek government spokesman said. The officials resigned after the launch of investigations into agricultural subsidies, while the Greek Parliament may also set up an Investigative Committee.
According to information, the government is closely monitoring developments and is expected to shape its position based on new data and information that will come to light in the near future.
Government sources emphasize that final decisions will be made based on the seriousness of the findings and the institutional framework that regulates the functioning of Parliament.
As he himself claims in a letter to the Prime Minister, Minister Voridis had declared that he had not committed any punishable act. After being familiarized with the contents of the case file during its reading in Parliament, Voridis discovered, as he claims, that there is no evidence to prove his criminal involvement.
However, PASOK spoke of indications of criminal offenses committed by him and announced a request to set up a pre-investigation commission.
Voridis notes that this intention makes him officially a suspect and for this reason, he chooses to leave the government.
"The status of a suspect in a criminal offense is not compatible with the status of a member of the Government," he emphasizes, noting that from now on he will focus exclusively on defending his innocence and protecting his honor and reputation.
