An unusual statement has come from Copenhagen, where Rasmus Jarlov, a member of the Danish parliament and chairman of the Defense Committee, has warned that any attempt by the United States to annex Greenland would constitute an act of war against Denmark.
"If there is any kind of invasion by American forces, then there will be war. We will fight them," Jarlov declared in an interview with CNN. He acknowledged that the Danish military cannot be compared to the American one in terms of strength, but stressed that it is Denmark's "national duty" to defend its land and people.
Greenland is an autonomous territory under Danish sovereignty and is home to around 57,000 inhabitants, who – according to Jarlov – have clearly rejected any idea of US takeover. He stressed that Denmark remains open to military cooperation with Washington, but an attempt at annexation would be not only unacceptable but also economically impossible for the US. “Why shoulder this cost, when the doors are open for cooperation?” Jarlov asked rhetorically.
The tensions come after former US President Donald Trump reiterated in March 2025 that “annexation of Greenland is a real possibility.” This is not the first time he has spoken out on the issue – during his first term, he had publicly proposed purchasing the island, sparking a backlash from Copenhagen and the international community.
Additional tension has been brought by the statement of US national security adviser Stephen Miller, who has questioned Denmark's right to control Greenland.
