Spain's prime minister has said he sees China as the main global interlocutor who can help end the war in Iran, as well as other conflicts such as the one in Ukraine.
Speaking after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, Pedro Sanchez said that China remains the only country that can resolve this conflict.
" I find it very difficult to find other interlocutors, beyond China, who can resolve this situation created in Iran and in the Strait of Hormuz ," Sanchez said.
His remarks are significant because they suggest that Sanchez considers China, the US's main global rival, a key player in ending the war. They will undoubtedly influence Beijing's efforts to position itself as a peacemaker in the region.
Sanchez has been one of Europe's most vocal critics of the US-Israeli war in the Middle East.
The Spanish government closed its airspace to American planes used in the war and said it was not allowing the US to use jointly operated military bases in southern Spain for operations related to the conflict.
