The United States has presented Iran with a proposal that envisions a 20-year “suspension” of all nuclear activity, in an attempt to create a new framework for limiting Iran’s nuclear program without requiring its complete and permanent dismantling, The New York Times reported, citing American sources.
According to US media, the proposal has emerged amid ongoing behind-the-scenes negotiations and aims to buy time, preventing Tehran from developing nuclear capabilities for two decades.
The report notes that Iran does not accept such a long-term “freeze” and favors a much more limited suspension, up to five years. This difference reflects the degree of mistrust between the parties and the difficulty of reaching an agreement that would permanently curb Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
According to The New York Times, the fact that the parties are now focusing on the length of a possible suspension could indicate that there is still room for compromise. There are also signs that negotiators could hold another meeting in the coming days. White House officials have said that no meeting has been finalized yet, but a new round of talks is being considered.
Another issue on the table remains that of the funds that Iran claims to be owed, around $6 billion in oil revenues, which have been blocked in Qatar due to sanctions.
