Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on US President Joe Biden to invite Ukraine to NATO "now" even if membership cannot happen until after the war ends.
Biden is the "decision maker" for Ukraine's admission to NATO or not, Zelensky told CNN.
"He supports our future in NATO, but an invitation now in these moments would be a great motivator for our soldiers," said Zelensky.
The alliance holds its next summit in Lithuania on July 11 and 12, and its leaders there are also expected to discuss Ukraine's membership. "It is very important for us to feel that we are truly surrounded by allies," Zelensky said, while adding that he fully understands that Ukraine "will never be in NATO before the end of the war."
The resolution of territorial disputes is "a key factor in determining whether a state will be invited to join the alliance." We understand this very well, was Zelensky's comment. "But this signal is really very important. And it depends on Biden's decision," he added.
In the same interview, the Ukrainian president emphasized that Vladimir Putin's response to Wagner's armed rebellion was "weak" and that all this showed that the Russian president is losing control over his people.
