
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in joint statements with the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis from Strasbourg, announced that Greece will be able to receive aid of 2.2 billion euros from the EU for the disasters of the last few days.
" Europe is close to the people in need and the Greeks. And I want you to know that Europe is close to Greece and the Greeks. We are a union of solidarity and it is very important that you are here today and we were able to meet", von der Leyen said.
Then she pledged that the EU will mobilize all the resources it can to help Greece which are respectively: European financial aid from the previous period from the EU cohesion funds. Also, Ursula von der Leyen promised to raise to the highest level the issue of financing Greece with some sources from the European Solidarity Fund in the amount of additional 400 million euros for 2024, while she also announced the creation of a task force for the province affected by the floods, Thessaly.
"I know that as in other cases we can have your personal support, the support of the EU as it happened in difficult times and the same thing will happen today," said Mitsotakis .
Earlier, Mitsotakis also met with EP President Roberta Mecola, whom he informed about the critical condition of the flooded areas. According to the latest estimates over 700,000 residents have been affected by the effects of storm Daniel last week and many areas of Thessaly have been left under water.
At least 15,000 head of cattle have been buried, the damage to crops and houses is colossal, there are major problems with the electricity network and drinking water, there are still national roads covered with water, among them the main axis Athens-Thessalonica, while there are great risks for the spread of epidemics.
