Police in Sweden on Sunday arrested two people and detained around 10 others, after violent riots erupted in a protest where the Koran was burned, the authorities announced.
The protests organized by Iraqi refugee Salwan Momika have sparked outrage in the Middle East.
He has organized protests to burn the Koran.
Muslims regard the Koran as a holy book and consider its deliberate damage a great insult deserving of severe punishment.
Sunday's protest was held in a square in the south of the city of Malmo, an area in which there are many migrants.
According to Swedish public broadcaster SVT, around 200 people have gathered to see Momika.
"Some were angry, as the organizer burned the writings", the police said in a statement.
"The atmosphere has sometimes become tense", it was said, among other things, in the statement.
According to the police, the event ended after the organizer left, but a group of people were still there.
About 10 people were arrested for disturbing public order and two were arrested for violent riots.
Local media have reported that some observers have thrown stones at Momikas and in some footage there have been people who have been seen trying to break the police cordon.
Through a series of protests, Momika has fueled anger and heightened tensions between Sweden and Middle Eastern states.
The Swedish government has condemned the burning of the Koran, but has said that the country's constitution protects freedom of expression.
In mid-August, Sweden's intelligence agency raised its terrorism alert, saying Sweden had gone from being a target for terrorist attacks to a priority target.
