British authorities have announced that 872 migrants crossed the English Channel in small boats in one day, marking the highest number during 2023.
15 boats made the crossing, bringing the total number of arrivals to 20,973 in 2023 so far, according to Home Office figures.
The previous highest total of migrants crossing in a single day was on August 10 when 756 migrants crossed. This new total comes less than two months after British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said his plan to ban small boat crossings was "working".
One of the five pledges is to "stop the boats" and although he said in July that he had always accepted that crossings "will increase over the summer", he insisted that his "overall strategy is right".
