The chances of a summit between US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping are "high", while Beijing and Washington need to "create the right atmosphere and achieve the objectives".
This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the end of a meeting described as "very constructive and positive" with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. According to a report in the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post, the US diplomat acknowledged that differences between the world's largest economies continue, but there is also a real opportunity for cooperation. "Of course, there are some issues that we will have to resolve, and that is to be expected with countries of our size, scope and influence in the world," he said, adding that "the meeting with Wang Yi was nevertheless very constructive and positive, and offered us ideas on which we can work together."
China and the United States should translate the "important consensus" reached by the two leaders, Xi Jinping and Donald Trump, "into concrete policies and actions," hoping that Washington will treat Beijing "equally, respectfully and in a mutually beneficial manner" in order to "jointly find a correct path for coexistence" between the two countries in this new historical period.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made this point in a statement issued after his meeting with the US Secretary of State. Wang expressed his hope that the United States "will view China objectively, rationally and pragmatically, and formulate its policy toward China with the goal of peaceful coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation," and called the meeting with Rubio "positive, pragmatic and constructive."
The parties, Beijing further reported, agreed to strengthen diplomatic channels, communication and dialogue at all levels and in all fields, to give full play to the role of diplomatic departments in promoting bilateral relations and to explore ways to expand the scope of cooperation while managing differences.
