Iran will meet with the US for nuclear talks only if Israel agrees to stop attacks on the country, Iranian officials told their European counterparts at a meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.
According to a Western official with knowledge of the talks, Iranian officials said they would not meet with a US delegation for direct talks while Israel is bombing their country.
Although officials were told that the US does not necessarily have the authority to stop Israel's military action, European representatives said they would convey the message, the Western official told CNN.
In turn, Iranian officials said they would ask their leadership whether a cessation of Iranian attacks on Israel would also be considered, the source added. If both of those things were to happen - and attacks by Iran and Israel were to cease - there could be direct talks with the Americans, the official said.
The US conveyed a very direct message that Iran's agreement not to enrich uranium would be an essential part of any direct talks, the official added.
