US President Donald Trump has rejected labeling Israel's campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip as a "genocide," stressing that the war began when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.
Asked about the genocide accusation, Trump said: "I don't think so. They're at war."
International groups accuse Israel of not allowing enough aid to enter to prevent famine and of showing disregard for civilian casualties.
"Some terrible things happened on October 7th," Trump said, as he prepared to board Air Force One in Allentown, Pennsylvania. "It was a terrible, terrible thing. One of the worst I've ever seen."
Asked for a broader update on Gaza, Trump reiterated that the US is working to feed Palestinians in the Strip.
"We want people to be fed. We're the only country that's really doing this. We're giving money to feed people. And Steve Witkoff is doing a great job."
Trump said Washington is "making some pretty big contributions, basically to buy food, so people can get fed."
"We don't want people to starve and we don't want people to die of hunger. And some bad things are happening," Trump said, without elaborating.
Many countries have mobilized in recent weeks to increase food aid to Gaza, amid reports of mass starvation threatening the population.
