French President Emmanuel Macron has reacted sharply to the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, describing them as brutal and baseless.
He stressed that these measures have a significant impact on the French and European economies, and called for appropriate measures to be taken to protect the sectors affected by these tariffs.
"What would be the message for major European players to start investing billions of euros in the American economy at the moment they are hitting us? " French President Emmanuel Macron said during a meeting with representatives of French industry.
Macron has expressed support for the European Union's stance, stressing that nothing can be ruled out in response to this move and that all tools are open to use, including the possibility of intervention in the digital services sector, from which the US benefits greatly from the European market.
"The decision announced last night is brutal and unfounded. It is unfounded because trade imbalances cannot be corrected by imposing tariffs. The foundations of economic theory show the opposite, especially when the imbalances do not take into account digital services," he said.
He has also appealed for a coordinated EU response, stressing that it is important for Europe to stand united and react as a single bloc to Trump's policies.
"We must have collective solidarity," Macron added.
In an effort to protect the French economy, Macron has suggested that changes to French investments in the US could be considered until the situation is clarified, and has called for the French sector not to be allowed to fall victim to these harmful tariffs.
