A serious incident has been recorded today at 'Temple Israel', a synagogue with an attached school in West Bloomfield Township, about 40 km northwest of Detroit in the USA. According to local and federal authorities, a gunman crashed his vehicle into the synagogue building, before being opened fire by the facility's security guards, who killed him on the spot.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard confirmed that the assailant was carrying a rifle and that after crashing into the building, security personnel responded by opening fire. No one else was reported injured, and the area was safely evacuated. There is no official confirmation of other injuries or serious damage to the building, but images from the scene show smoke billowing from the roof.
An investigation was immediately launched by federal authorities, with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) on the scene. The motive for the attack remains unclear and the investigation is in its early stages.
Following the incident, police have increased security measures at all Jewish institutions in the region. Sheriff Bouchard stated that Jewish facilities will have an increased law enforcement presence until the circumstances are fully clarified.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said she is monitoring the event and stressed that "anti-Semitism and any form of violence should not be tolerated under any circumstances."
The shooting took place in the town of West Bloomfield, which is located in the US state of Michigan. It is less than a half-hour drive from the city of Detroit. The city has a population of just over 66,000.

And Temple Israel, the first synagogue in Metro Detroit founded in 1941, is the largest Reform synagogue in the U.S., according to the congregation's website. It has about 3,500 families that are members, or about 12,000 believers.
