Israel's Foreign Ministry has stated that Iran has fired rockets towards Jerusalem and that one of them fell a few hundred meters from the Old City, an area where some of the most important religious sites in the world are located.
In a statement published on the social network X, the ministry said the rocket hit near the Western Wall, Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which are located in the Old City and are considered holy to Jews, Muslims and Christians.
"The Iranian regime is firing rockets at Jerusalem. One of them hit just a few hundred meters from the Old City, the Western Wall, the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre ," the Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
According to Israeli authorities, prayers at the holy sites have been temporarily suspended for security reasons.
"Protecting the lives and safety of believers is a priority. This is why prayers at all holy sites have been temporarily suspended ," the statement said.
The ministry's statement represents Israel's official position on the incident. So far, there has been no public reaction from Iranian authorities regarding these allegations.
