They showed up at the home of an elderly woman in her 80s dressed as carabinieri. In fact, they were two robbers who managed to trick the elderly woman into allowing them to enter and search her apartment.
The theft took place last May in Bologna, near the city's stadium, and two Italians, aged 31 and 39, have been arrested on suspicion of the robbery.
According to the police, the woman had found the two men in front of her house, one of whom was wearing a jacket with the word "Carabinieri". They had told her that they had to carry out a search because there had been a burglary in her house and that the perpetrators had been arrested. Scared by the story the men in uniform had told, the woman had allowed them to enter, allowing them to search the two-story apartment. Together with them, she had also opened a safe where she kept all her jewelry and valuables. That was enough for the two robbers disguised as carabinieri, who after taking everything of value quickly left.
Investigators reviewed security camera footage that captured the two robbers in front of the woman's apartment and then their speeding away.
The two had arrived on a high-powered motorcycle with forged license plates. Both were arrested on July 28 in the province of Rimini.
