Kamala Harris has said that she currently has no desire to re-enter the "system" of American politics because it is "broken."
On Thursday evening, the Democratic presidential candidate, who replaced Joe Biden at the end of the 2024 campaign after the latter dropped out of the race for re-election, gave her first interview since losing the presidential race to Donald Trump, speaking with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show.
After announcing she would not run for governor of California just a day earlier, Harris told the TV show that it was about something more "basic" than whether she wanted to run for anything else, with the subtext being whether she would try to run for the White House again in 2028.
"I recently made the decision that I just don't want to go back into the system for the time being. I think it's broken," she said.
Describing herself as a “devoted public servant,” the former vice president added: “I have always believed that, however fragile our democracy may be, our systems would be strong enough to protect our most fundamental principles. And I think now that they are not as strong as they should be. And right now, I don’t want to go back to that system.”
