Attempted poisoning of Bashar al-Assad, former Syrian President ends up in

An assassination attempt on former Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad has occurred in Moscow.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Bashar al-Assad has been hospitalized after an attempt to poison him.

The former president, who was granted political asylum in Russia after being ousted from power ten months ago, was reportedly hospitalized in a Moscow suburb and only left on Monday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights cites a 'private source' who claims that Assad was poisoned and that the aim of the assassination was to embarrass the Russian government and accuse it of complicity in his death.

The report says Assad's condition is now stable. Only his brother, Maher al-Assad, has been allowed to visit him in hospital after a major security operation, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Russian government has not yet commented on the claims. The news of Assad's poisoning comes at a time when the new authorities in Syria have sought his extradition, but Russia has so far refused.

Putin has personally granted asylum to Assad, his family members and regime associates. The 60-year-old has not been seen in public since arriving in Russia and is believed to be under tight protection by Russian secret services.
