An alarm was raised early Thursday morning in north Manchester. At least four people were injured in the incident which took place on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.
Manchester Police confirmed that the suspect was shot and failed to enter the building, while an online video shows the scene with police officers removing citizens and a man lying in the courtyard, while another is found bleeding at the synagogue gate.
"Police were called to the Hebrew Congregation Heaton Park Synagogue, Middleton Road, Crumpsall, at 9.31am by a member of the public who stated that they had seen a car driven towards members of the public and a man stabbed.
The PMP declared a PLATO and serious incident at 9.37am. Shots were fired by Greater Manchester Police firearms officers at 9.38am. A man was shot, believed to be the perpetrator.
"Paramedics arrived at the scene at 9.41am and are treating the injured, currently four members of the public with injuries caused by the vehicle and stab wounds. Members of the public are being asked to avoid the area while police continue to deal with the incident."
Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, speaking to the BBC, also urged people to "avoid the area".
"I would tell people to avoid the area because it is a serious incident, but at the same time I can give you some reassurance that the immediate danger appears to have passed and GMP dealt with it very quickly with amazing support from members of the public and security on site."
