US President Donald Trump has announced the extension of the ceasefire with Iran, just hours before it was due to expire, opening a new opportunity to continue negotiations and avoid an immediate military escalation.
In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump said the decision came at a time when the political situation in Iran remains fragile and fragmented. He noted that the postponement of military action was also made at the request of the leadership of Pakistan, which is playing a mediating role in this crisis.
" Based on the fact that the Iranian government is seriously divided, and at the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan, we have been asked to suspend the attack on Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives present a unified proposal ," Trump wrote.
The US president announced that he has instructed the military to continue the blockade on Iran and remain on full alert for any possible development.
" I have instructed the US military to continue the blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and capable ," he stressed.
According to Trump, the ceasefire, which was expected to end in the coming hours, will be extended until the Iranian side presents a proposal and the talks are concluded.
" Therefore, the ceasefire will be extended until this proposal is submitted and the discussions are concluded, one way or another ," he added.
The decision to extend the ceasefire comes at a critical moment, when tensions in the region had reached their peak and signals for a new military clash had increased, including force movements and harsh rhetoric from both sides.
The latest development creates a new space for diplomacy, but the situation remains unstable, as the US continues to apply pressure through the blockade, while it remains to be seen whether Iran will present a concrete offer to avoid a return to conflict.
