The US Air Force has set aside $50 million in funding to start a project next year that could pave the way for the return of US nuclear weapons to the UK for the first time in more than 15 years. .
It would be a 144-bed mega facility in Suffolk, England, at the RAF base at Lakenheath, The Guardian reports.
To justify the expense, the US Air Force told Congress that the building was intended to house enlisted personnel as part of a security mission, which experts say is the jargon the Pentagon uses to refer to nuclear weapons management.
Construction of the building should begin in June 2024 and be completed in February 2026. At today's briefing, the US Department of Defense responded "no comment" to reporters who requested information on the news.
According to the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), the United Kingdom along with five other European countries, including Italy, are investing in the construction of sites to store "special weapons".
100 B-61 bombers would be deployed in these five locations, according to FAS.
They were taken from the UK in 2017, but the storage facilities have never been dismantled.
