British Cabinet Secretary Sir Chris Wormald resigned this Thursday, February 12, 2026, after just 14 months in office, the shortest tenure in history for the post.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed Wormald's immediate departure, saying he had agreed with him to end his tenure. Starmer praised his contribution over more than 35 years in the civil service, but did not elaborate on the exact reasons for his resignation.
Wormald is the third senior official to leave Downing Street in as many days. He follows Morgan McSweeney, the prime minister's chief of staff, on Sunday, and Tim Allan, the communications director, on Monday.
The departures come amid a deep restructuring of government staff and after major tensions caused by the appointment and then departure of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the US.
New documents from the Epstein dossier, recently released, have prompted fierce criticism of Starmer's judgment in appointing Mandelson, despite his links to Jeffrey Epstein.
In the interim, the duties of the cabinet secretary will be covered by several permanent secretaries, with Antonia Romeo (Home Office) considered the favourite to take the post on a permanent basis.
Keir Starmer has rejected any calls for his resignation and said the government will continue its normal work, but the successive departures have raised concerns about the stability of the Labour administration just a few months after coming to power.
