Tragedy in Switzerland, Prosecution investigates bar managers; charges revealed
Moments before the tragedy

The prosecution has placed under investigation the French managers of the "Le Constellation" bar in Crans Montana, where 40 people lost their lives in a tragic fire on New Year's Eve. They are suspected of manslaughter, negligent bodily harm and negligent arson.

The fire left 40 people dead and 119 injured. Police have confirmed that 113 injured people have been identified so far, including 71 Swiss, 14 French and 11 Italians.

The first bodies identified were two Swiss women, aged 21 and 16, and two Swiss boys, aged 18 and 16, who were handed over to their families. Many of the victims and missing are teenagers, as the bar was known to be a place frequented mainly by young people, in an area where the legal drinking age is 16.

According to preliminary investigations, the possible cause of the fire was the use of small fireworks in champagne bottles, which are suspected to have come too close to the ceiling of the bar.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin called the event "one of the gravest tragedies" the country has experienced.

Meanwhile, flowers and messages of condolence have been placed outside the bar. The families have headed to a conference center near Crans-Montana, where they are receiving appropriate assistance from representatives of the Italian Civil Protection and the Italian ambassador to Switzerland, Gian Lorenzo Cornado.

The latter announced that the identification process is expected to be completed by Sunday afternoon, explaining that the delays are related to the severe burns suffered by many of the victims.
