France recalls soft cheeses after 21 people are poisoned

21 people, aged between 34 and 95, have fallen ill with listeriosis, according to the French Public Health Agency. Two people have died.

Health officials said they have established a possible link between these cases of listeriosis and the consumption of pasteurized milk cheeses produced by the Chavegrand company, for which emergency measures have been taken to withdraw them from the market.

The contaminated products were distributed to large supermarkets in France and exported to around 30 other countries, including Albania, the United Kingdom, Norway, Belgium, Denmark and many other countries.

Most infected people may not show any symptoms or have mild symptoms, but in some cases listeriosis can turn into a life-threatening illness.

Listeriosis is particularly dangerous for pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, nausea and, in severe cases, meningitis. French health authorities urged people not to consume the recalled cheeses and to closely monitor their health if they have recently consumed them.

Symptoms of listeriosis can appear up to eight weeks after consuming contaminated food.
