Trump: I will personally be involved in choosing Iran's new leader,
Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump said he wants to be personally involved in the process of choosing Iran's next leader, following recent developments in the country. The statement was made during an interview with the American media outlet Axios.

Trump said he considers a personal role in this process necessary, drawing comparisons with the political interventions that, according to him, he has previously supported in Venezuela.

The US president also criticized Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran's slain supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, who is considered by some analysts to be one of the possible candidates to succeed him.

According to Trump, a leadership of Iran by Mojtaba Khamenei would risk rekindling tensions with the United States. He argued that if the same policies as in the past were continued, Washington could face another conflict with Iran within a few years.

Trump said he intends to support a figure who, according to him, could bring "harmony and peace" to Iran, implying that he does not support a transition of power within the current structures of the Iranian political system.

In the same interview, the US president downplayed the potential role of Mojtaba Khamenei, stating that he is "not an important figure," and reiterated that he wants to have influence in the process of choosing the next leadership in Tehran.
