About 20,000 American citizens have returned to the United States from the Middle East since Saturday, when the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran, the US State Department said.
According to US authorities, an unspecified number of other citizens have been evacuated to third countries or are currently en route to return to the US.
US officials are coordinating charter flights and ground transportation for citizens seeking to leave Middle Eastern countries. The State Department said these operations are expected to be gradually increased in the coming days.
On Tuesday, Washington urged Americans to leave more than a dozen countries in the region, due to the escalating security situation.
However, the State Department has also faced criticism from some citizens and lawmakers, who have sought more clarity regarding evacuation procedures and services available to Americans still in the region.
