US President Donald Trump has told his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan that he intends to attend the NATO summit in Ankara in July, according to sources familiar with the talks, quoted by Middle East Eye.
In April, Trump stated that he was seriously considering the possibility of withdrawing the US from NATO, expressing dissatisfaction with the functioning of the alliance.
However, during a phone call with Erdogan on May 20, the US president appeared to take a different stance, signaling a willingness to visit Ankara and attend the summit, according to the report.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated over the weekend that Erdogan has held several conversations with Trump over the past month and that in none of them has the US president hinted that he will miss the NATO meeting.
Meanwhile, media outlets have reported that Erdogan wants to hold a meeting with Trump in Los Angeles, in the context of the World Cup match between the United States and Turkey, scheduled for June 25. However, according to the same sources, a final decision on such a visit has not yet been made.
Since the beginning of the year, Trump has given mixed signals regarding the US military presence in Europe. Just weeks after ordering the withdrawal of 5,000 US soldiers from the European continent, he declared that he intends to send a similar number of troops to Poland.
