The prices of basic products at Santorini airport have attracted public attention, as a one-liter bottle of water is sold for 6.30 euros, while the same product can be purchased at a supermarket for only 1.86 euros.
The difference amounts to 4.44 euros per bottle, which means that the price at the airport is about 3.4 times higher than that of the retail market outside the airport area.
The case has also aroused particular interest due to Greek legislation, which sets a maximum price of 0.60 euros for 500 ml water bottles in airports and other areas with high visitor flow.
The rules have been changed several times in recent years. In 2015, the maximum price for a 500 ml bottle was 0.35 euros. In 2023, it increased to 0.50 euros for 500 ml packaging and 0.75 euros for 750 ml bottles. Since 2025, the ceiling is 0.60 euros for 500 ml bottles in airports, ports, beaches, archaeological sites, museums and other public spaces.
Although the legal restriction only applies to certain packaging sizes, the price of 6.30 euros for a one-liter bottle of water has raised questions about the large price differences of basic products in tourist centers.
The case of Santorini brings back into focus the debate over the costs faced by tourists and travelers in some of the most frequented Mediterranean destinations.
