US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that Washington is close to a deal with Iran that would prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. He said the Strait of Hormuz could reopen within two or three days of the deal being signed.
Speaking to reporters at JFK Airport, Trump said Israel and Iran are expected to avoid escalating tensions for at least a week, after what he described as a "very good conversation" with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"He got hit and he got hit back, and I can't blame him for that," Trump said, adding, "He got hit, he got hit back, and now he seems to have backed off. So I think they'll leave each other alone for about a week or something like that."
The US president added that the US is in the final stages of a "very good deal" with Iran, which, according to him, will not allow the country to develop or produce nuclear weapons.
"The Strait of Hormuz will be opened immediately. It will be opened as soon as the deal is signed, which could be within two or three days," Trump declared.
He also announced that the pilots of the American Apache helicopter, which crashed near the strait the night before, are safe and in good health.
Trump has previously made statements about an imminent peace deal, but tensions in the region have since returned. His latest comments come at a sensitive time, as Iran and Israel temporarily suspended hostilities after fresh exchanges of fire on Sunday and Monday.
