The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the new escalation of tensions in Lebanon and on the border with Israel, following recent attacks in the southern suburbs of Beirut and the exchange of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah.
UN spokesman Farhan Haq said the organization is "alarmed" by the developments of recent days, which are further jeopardizing the fragile stability in the region.
According to him, the UN peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon (UNIFIL) recorded over the weekend more than 2,100 incidents of fire coming from Israeli positions, as well as 201 violations of Lebanese airspace by Israeli forces.
These military flights over Lebanese territory lasted a total of approximately 288 hours, according to UNIFIL data.
The UN mission also reported dozens of rockets fired from the north to the south, believed to have been fired by Hezbollah towards Israeli territory.
Haq stressed that the situation is having serious consequences for the civilian population and recalled that under international law, civilians and civilian infrastructure should not be targeted.
" We are particularly concerned about the devastating impact on civilians. Civilians and civilian objects must be protected under all circumstances ," he said.
UN peacekeeping forces themselves have also been affected by the clashes. According to Haq, military drones have flown near UNIFIL convoys, while the movement of some mission vehicles has been hindered by both civilians on the ground and an Israeli tank.
In the face of rising tensions, the UN called on all parties to show maximum restraint.
" We call on everyone to avoid any action that could further inflame an already very unstable situation ," the organization's spokesperson stated.
The UN warning comes at a time when the fragile ceasefire in the Middle East is being put under pressure by ongoing clashes between Israel, Hezbollah and Iran's regional allies, raising fears of a wider conflict in the region.
