Donald Trump appears to be seeking China's help in confronting Russia, with the aim of ending the war in Ukraine, just days before his scheduled meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea.
Speaking from Air Force One, while en route to Malaysia, Trump told reporters that "I would like China to help us with Russia."
"I have a very good relationship with President Xi. Very good," the US president said, adding that Xi also wants to see the end of the war.
He also explained, in other statements earlier this week, that the Chinese president "can have a lot of influence" on Vladimir Putin.
In other comments today, Trump said he would "waste no time" by scheduling another meeting with Putin without an imminent deal to end the war in Ukraine.
"I should have known we were going to make a deal," he told reporters accompanying him on his tour of Asia, when asked what would convince him to schedule another meeting with the Russian president.
"I won't waste my time. I've always had an excellent relationship with Vladimir Putin, but this has been very disappointing," he added, referring to efforts to resolve the conflict between Moscow and Kiev.
The American president has not failed to express his disappointment with Moscow and his Russian counterpart personally recently.
"Every time I talk to Vladimir, we have good conversations, but they don't lead anywhere," he said a few days ago.
Trump's meeting with Xi on Thursday is expected to focus on trade relations between the two countries - Trump's threat of heavy tariffs on China if a trade deal is not reached by November 1 is also on hold.
Providing context, Trump said he would discuss "everything" with Xi, including the war in Ukraine.
