Mamdani "under fire", the Muslim who shocked New York and challenges the American elite
Today, in-person voting began in New York for the elections considered the most closely watched this year in the US, the race for mayor of the largest American city.
Citizens are voting between three main candidates: progressive Democrat Zohran Mamdani, who leads in all polls; former governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent after losing in the June primary; and Republican Curtis Sliwa, who holds a small conservative base in the city.
Mamdani, of Ugandan and Indian descent, is expected to become the first Muslim mayor in New York City history if he wins. He has inspired left-wing voters with a platform that includes universal child care, free public transportation and a rent freeze on more than 1 million rent-regulated apartments. But at the same time, he has faced a barrage of personal, racial and Islamophobic attacks from his political rivals and wealthy establishment figures.
Former Governor Cuomo has stepped up his attacks in recent days, using language laced with racial overtones and 9/11 subtext. On a radio show, he suggested that Mamdani would not be trusted in the event of a terrorist attack, a statement that sparked widespread outrage. Hours later, his team released a racist, AI-generated video of Mamdani in a derogatory manner, which was publicly condemned by many American political figures.
Even current Mayor Eric Adams, after withdrawing from the race, has attacked Mamdani, calling him a “communist,” while Republican figures such as Donald Trump and Congresswoman Elise Stefanik have called the Democratic candidate a “danger to the city.” On another front, a group of rabbis published an open letter against him for his critical stances toward Israel and support for Palestinian independence.
However, Mamdani has maintained a calm and determined tone, calling the campaign against him “racist and desperate.” He has stressed that the goal of opponents is to scare voters and avoid debates on the city’s real issues, such as the housing crisis and the rising cost of living.
Cuomo's campaign, on the other hand, is being funded by some of New York's most prominent billionaires, including Bill Ackman, Michael Bloomberg and Ronald Lauder, who have poured millions of dollars into super PACs aimed at stopping Mamdani. But these interventions appear to have only strengthened the leftist candidate's narrative as a representative of the working class against the financial elites.
Recent polls show Mamdani maintaining a clear lead: about 43 to 45 percent of voters declare support for him, while Cuomo is in the 28–30 percent range and Sliwa is around 19 percent. Almost 10 percent of voters remain undecided. In a head-to-head matchup between Mamdani and Cuomo, the gap narrows to about 4 points, but still favors the progressive candidate.
Meanwhile, a separate poll has shown that more than a quarter of city residents would consider leaving New York if Mamdani is elected mayor, a sign of the deep polarization that this race has created.
However, analysts see Mamdani as the clear frontrunner. He enjoys broad support in working-class and immigrant neighborhoods, and his inclusive rhetoric and campaign energy have brought many young people who traditionally do not participate to the polls. Early voting, which accounts for over 30 percent of the total turnout, could be the deciding factor in sealing his victory.
In essence, the New York race has become a symbol of the clash between the new generation of progressive Democrats and the old party structure. Whatever happens in the coming days, this battle is expected to have national resonance and determine the political direction of the most important city in the US for years to come. /Pamphlet
