US President Donald Trump has retaliated against Canada by imposing an additional 10% tariff. This comes after the American leader broke off negotiations with the neighboring country after an anti-tariff ad aired. In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the airing of the ad as a "hostile act."
"Due to serious misrepresentation of the facts and hostile action, I am increasing the tariff on Canada by 10% above what they are currently paying," Trump wrote.
The move comes even though Ontario's leader said the advertising would stop starting Monday.
Earlier this month, Ontario officials began airing an ad featuring excerpts from a 1987 radio address by former President Ronald Reagan, in which he said tariffs work "only for a short time" and "hurt every American worker and consumer."
The ad angered Trump on Thursday, who responded by suspending trade talks with Canada. The president also cited a statement from the Ronald Reagan Foundation that claimed the ad misrepresented Reagan's original radio address.
The US has already imposed a 35% tariff on all Canadian goods, although most are exempt under an existing free trade agreement. The US has also imposed sector-specific tariffs on Canadian goods, including a 50% tariff on metals and a 25% tariff on automobiles.
