US President Donald Trump has left open the possibility of a limited attack on Iran, against the backdrop of the large concentration of US forces in the region and the broader escalation of tension in the last 24 hours in the Middle East.
" I think I can say I'm considering it ," Trump specifically replied, when asked about the possibility of a limited attack on Iran.
This statement by the American president comes as Tehran has stated that it is not seeking war, but in the event of an attack we will respond decisively.
In a letter to the Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council, Iran's permanent representative to the UN, Amir Seyed Iravani, denounced the continued threats of force by the US, calling them a flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter and international law, which risk plunging the region into a new cycle of crisis and instability.
The letter specifically refers to a public statement by the US president, who said that if Iran decides not to enter into an agreement, it may become necessary for the United States to use Diego Garcia and the airport located in Fairford to deter a possible attack.
It is noteworthy that in recent days, reports in the American press that Trump is leaning towards an attack on Iran have intensified. On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the American president is considering the possibility of a limited first military strike against Iran, in order to pressure Tehran to accept his terms for a new nuclear deal.
According to people familiar with the discussions, the scenario calls for a targeted attack on several military or government installations, as a first step before a possible broader campaign.
