US President Donald Trump said he will send Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to US airports starting Monday if a deal is not reached to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) amid a partial government shutdown.

"If the Democrats do not allow fair and proper security at our airports and other parts of the country, ICE will do the job better than ever before," Trump wrote on the Truth Social network, adding that he had asked agents to "get ready."

However, it remains unclear what specific role ICE agents would have, as they are not trained in airport security screening, a process typically performed by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees.

According to estimates, agents can be used in auxiliary roles, such as queue management and passenger orientation, to facilitate the work of trained staff.

Trump's statement comes at a time when a lack of funding for DHS has caused problems at airports, with TSA employees not being paid and staffing shortages leading to delays.

The president also suggested that ICE agents could be involved in arresting undocumented immigrants, giving a broader dimension to his plan.

Democrats reacted immediately, criticizing the idea as unconstitutional and unconstitutional. Senator Richard Blumenthal called the proposal the use of ICE “as a general police force,” while Senator Mark Warner said Trump’s statements were “worthless.”

On the other hand, some Republicans were more open to the idea. Senator John Kennedy said that using ICE could help manage the situation, but it is not a complete solution to airport security problems.

Meanwhile, negotiations over DHS funding continue in Congress, with efforts from both sides to reach an agreement and avoid escalating the crisis.
