Criticism grows within the MAGA camp, as the president's ability to govern is questioned
Even within the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) camp, the question of whether US President Donald Trump is still fit to exercise his office in a reasonable manner is increasingly being asked. However, Trump shows no signs of softening his rhetoric or his political approach.
Tucker Carlson didn't hold back in a conversation with his brother Buckley.
“You, me and millions of people like us,” the former Fox News host and former Trump supporter said on his podcast, “are the reason this is happening now .” He was referring to Trump’s style of governance and policy decisions, particularly the nearly two-month-long war with Iran. Carlson added that it would “haunt him for a long time” and apologized for “leading people in the wrong direction ,” stressing that this was not his intention.
Just a year and a half ago, Carlson was campaigning for Trump and was a guest at the White House in January. His latest statements represent the culmination of strong criticism from influential figures within MAGA, at one of Trump's weakest political moments.
According to a CNN analysis, eight of nine major polls last month showed historically low levels of support for the president.
The American President Project archive shows that at the end of his first term in 2021, Trump had a 34 percent approval rating, after his supporters stormed the Capitol, which is considered his lowest political point. Recent polls, following the start of the war with Iran, put his approval rating even lower: four polls this week put it between 32 and 36 percent.
A similar situation was observed with President George W. Bush, who fell below 40 percent approval three years after the start of the Iraq war. For Trump, however, the war with Iran represents only the culmination of a decline that had begun earlier in the year, when criticism focused on his tough immigration policy and the state of the economy.
In recent days, Trump has chosen to attack the media he calls "fake news," accusing the Wall Street Journal of being a "weak newspaper" and CNN of being "corrupt," claiming that they are minimizing his successes in Iran and distorting reality. He has also stated that some "anti-American" media are hoping for an Iranian victory, which, according to him, will not happen.

Despite mounting criticism, Trump continues to make strong statements. He declared that the Vietnam War would have ended more quickly under his leadership and that the US "essentially" won in Iran. He also expressed surprise that energy prices did not rise more during the conflict.
