US President Donald Trump, during a press conference in France, stated that the expected agreement with Iran is not the result of recent negotiations, but a process built over years.
Speaking about the G7 summit and talks with allies, Trump said the agreement aims to avoid further escalation of the conflict and its economic consequences.
"I didn't want to see an 'economic catastrophe' because of the war," he said, adding that a continuation of the conflict could have led to serious global consequences.
Trump also commented that Iran's current leadership is "more reasonable" and capable of pursuing a different approach compared to the past.
In his statements, he also linked the development of the agreement to the events of his first term, mentioning the American operation that led to the killing of the commander of the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Qasem Soleimani, in January 2020 in Baghdad.
Under the draft agreement, the US would allow Iran to sell its oil and petrochemical products, and Tehran could be able to benefit from a $300 billion development fund if it meets commitments related to its nuclear program in further negotiations. The document does not include specific details on what will be done with Iran's highly enriched uranium.
The US official told CNN that the text reflects the agreement digitally signed by President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on Sunday.
Speaking to CNN, U.S. officials have downplayed the significance of the memorandum itself, calling it a “political document” that does not reflect critical secret commitments Iran has made to the United States, specifically on the future of Tehran’s nuclear program. The White House did not respond to a request for comment when presented with a draft obtained by CNN. Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency described leaked versions of the draft as inaccurate. Bloomberg previously published a version of the draft.
