United States President Donald Trump has expressed serious interest in private conversations about the possibility of sending American troops to Iranian territory, according to two American officials, a former US official and another person with knowledge of the discussions, cited by NBC News.
Trump reportedly discussed the idea of deploying ground forces with advisers and Republican officials outside the White House. In these conversations, he also outlined his vision for a post-conflict Iran, where the country's uranium program would be under control and the United States would work with a new Iranian government to produce oil.
The sources emphasize that the discussions are not related to a large-scale ground invasion of Iran. According to NBC, the US president has mainly considered the scenario of deploying a limited number of troops, which would be used for specific strategic objectives.
However, according to the same sources, no decision has been made and Trump has not given any official order for the deployment of ground forces.
Publicly, the US president has not ruled out the possibility of sending troops to Iran, but so far military operations have been limited mainly to air strikes.
Private discussions, according to NBC, suggest that Trump may be more willing to consider this option than his public statements suggest.
In conversations with associates, he has cited as a model a scenario similar to the relationship that has developed between the US and Venezuela since US special forces arrested Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January of this year. Under this vision, a new government in Iran could cooperate with the US in the energy sector.
