During a press conference at the White House, United States President Donald Trump has hardened his tone towards NATO, declaring that the war with Iran has left a "mark that will never fade" in relations with the alliance.
" I'm very disappointed in NATO ," Trump told reporters, directly linking this stance to the lack of support from European allies during the conflict.
He added that NATO representatives are expected to meet him on Wednesday, underlining that, according to him, the alliance is changing its stance only after developments on the ground have tilted in favor of the US.
" Now, all of a sudden, they want to help ," the US president declared, suggesting that member countries had chosen to stay away until the outcome of the war was clear. He said there was no need now that he was winning. " NATO is a paper tiger. Rute is a great number but we didn't get any help ," Trump said.
He further attacked allies in Asia: " Neither Korea, nor Japan, nor Australia gave us any help. We have troops in Korea and Japan to protect them from Kim Jong Un, with whom I get along well ."
These statements reinforce the open clash between Washington and its traditional allies, who for the most part have refused to get directly involved in operations against Iran, considering the conflict outside the NATO framework.
Trump's stance on the alliance has become increasingly critical in recent weeks, including warnings to review the US role in NATO, at a time when analysts consider it one of the deepest crises in its history.
