United States President Donald Trump has stated that he played a crucial role in increasing the financial commitment of NATO member countries to defense, calling this one of his greatest foreign policy achievements.
While taking stock of his 1-year work, Trump said that alliance members agreed to increase defense spending to 5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), from the previous level of 2%, emphasizing that no one else has done more for NATO than he has.
"I did more for NATO than any other person, living or dead. I think for the most part, they will tell you that," Trump declared, adding that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, according to him, has also accepted this role.
However, Trump also expressed concerns about the treatment of the United States within the alliance. He pointed out that the US spends a lot of money on NATO and raised doubts about whether other member countries would be willing to help Washington if needed.
" My big fear with NATO is that we spend tremendous amounts of money and I know we're going to help them, but I question whether they're going to come to us or not," Trump said.
