Donald Trump has the "personality of an alcoholic," Susie Wiles, the US president's chief of staff, said in an article published today by Vanity Fair magazine, which she later described as a "dishonest and biased article."

Wiles, a key figure in Trump's election campaign and currently in a leadership position in the White House, has given a series of interviews to the American magazine, which are part of a long report on the president's inner circle.

Among other things, Wiles has implied that Trump has deliberately pursued a strategy of regime change in Venezuela through a naval bombing campaign, contradicting the official justifications for these attacks, which claim to be part of a "war on drugs."

In her conversations with journalist Chris Whipple, Wiles has also described various episodes in which the president has ignored her advice, including on sensitive issues like deportations.

In the article, she also expresses unfavourable opinions about some of the senior figures in the Trump administration, including Vice President JD Vance and Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Elsewhere in the interview, Wiles also commented on Elon Musk, calling him an “avowed ketamine user.” Referring to Musk’s role as the informal head of the “Ministry of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) in the early months of the Trump presidency, she said: “The challenge with Elon is living with him. He’s an admitted ketamine user. And during the day, he sleeps in a sleeping bag in the Executive Office Building (EOB).”

Wiles' statements have sparked immediate reactions in Washington and appear set to deepen divisions within the Republican camp as Trump tries to consolidate power ahead of the upcoming presidential election.

When asked about Vice President JD Vance's political transformation from critic to supporter of Donald Trump, Wiles said he "has been a conspiracy theorist for a decade" and implied that his transformation was "politically motivated" in contrast to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who, according to her, truly joined the US president out of conviction.

Vance and Rubio are often portrayed as rivals in the race to succeed Donald Trump.
