The true face of the US military campaign in the Caribbean and Latin America is revealed: not a war on drugs, but another attempt at regime change.
White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles has claimed that the US military's bombing of suspected drug trafficking boats is actually part of a strategy to overthrow Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
In an interview published by Vanity Fair magazine, Wiles was quoted as saying: “ He (Trump) is going to keep blowing up those boats until Maduro surrenders. And people much smarter than me say that will happen .”
This statement contradicts the official narrative of the Trump administration, which has justified the intervention as part of the "war on drugs."
Wiles' comments have sparked strong reactions in Washington. Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, writing on the X network: " So this is not a war on cartels. This is regime change. Either way, this is completely illegal and absurd ."
Meanwhile, the Pentagon itself announced that it had carried out three more strikes in the Eastern Pacific Ocean this week alone, where eight people were reported dead. Since the campaign began, more than 90 people have been killed, most in international waters, raising concerns about violations of international law and extrajudicial executions.
Tensions between the US and Venezuela have risen sharply in recent months. Last week, US forces seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela, prompting a strong reaction from the government in Caracas, which described the act as "international piracy."
Meanwhile, Trump continues to refer to Maduro as a "narco-dictator" and has declared that "his days are numbered."
Ironically, Trump a few weeks ago pardoned the former president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernandez, a right-wing ally convicted of international drug trafficking.
