US President Donald Trump is considering the candidacy of John Hurley, a senior US Treasury official, for the role of ambassador to Germany, the Financial Times reported.

Hurley, who currently holds the position of undersecretary of the Treasury for terrorism and financial intelligence, has been interviewed by the White House for roles including that of ambassador to Germany, according to the FT report.

The post has been temporarily held by a career diplomat since July 2024. According to the Financial Times report, no decision has yet been made on whether Hurley will take over the German ambassador job and he remains in his position at the Treasury.

Senior US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, are in Germany for the Munich Security Conference.

Trump has appointed an eclectic mix of European ambassadors since returning to the White House for his second term, including several with banking or investment experience.

The Trump administration has had a strained relationship with Germany. Vice President J.D. Vance met last year with the leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party; and a German parliamentary delegation that visited Washington late last month saw the center-left lawmakers frozen out by the U.S. State Department.

Hurley was officially confirmed for his current role in July and has been involved in imposing sanctions on Russia, including against a cybercrime service provider. He was previously an investor and officer in the US Army, earning a Bronze Star during the first Gulf War.
