A possible military plan to obtain enriched uranium is reported, with high risks and great complexity
US President Donald Trump is considering a military operation to remove 1,000 kilograms of uranium from Iran, the Wall Street Journal reports. The operation “would likely place US forces inside the country for days or longer,” according to the newspaper, which cited unnamed security officials.
Trump has not yet made a decision, but "remains generally open to the idea, according to officials, because it could help achieve his primary objective of preventing Iran from building nuclear weapons."
The New York Times reports that troops deployed to the region “could be used in a mission targeting Iran’s enriched uranium at its Isfahan nuclear facilities ,” but could also be used to take control of Kharg Island or defend the Strait of Hormuz.
The New York Times reported earlier this month that Trump is “clearly considering” an operation to “seize and destroy nearly bomb-grade nuclear material believed to be stored mostly deep under a mountain in Isfahan . ”
Both media outlets emphasize that the operation would be complex and high-risk.
